AN INTRODUCTION TO OUR NAANS
Naans are one of India’s most popular breads.
They’re thought to have been brought to India
from Central Asia and variations of the naan
can be found in Turkey, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
The first recorded history of naans in India are
found in the notes of the Indo-Persian poet Amir
Kushrau in 1300 AD, when he talks about it being
cooked at the Imperial Court in Delhi. Back then,
they were good enough for royalty, but were also
cooked in central tandoors in the villages.

Here, naans are mostly restaurant fare as few people have a tandoor at home!
In India however, they are often made in small street stalls or shops where
they are bought and taken home fresh for a hot meal. In the Punjabi city of
Amritsar, naans are often stuffed and called kulchas and eaten for breakfast
with a chickpea curry and a cup of tea. In Delhi, they are regularly paired
with things like tandoori chicken or lamb and paired with a tangy herb chutney.
In the Southern state of Hyderabad, naans are thick and square and dipped into curries.
In Rajasthan, they love them with their roasted game meats and some spicy chilli and
garlic chutney. There is almost no meal in which a good naan does not fit and add.
The Spice Tailor naans are flame baked for that tandoori flavour,
thin like a North Indian naan, yet soft and pliable. It took us many,
many months to perfect them so they are not thick and doughy and enhance
rather than take over your meal. We have three flavours in our range; Plain,
Onion and Garlic & Coriander Naans. They each have their own character
but are all equally delicious and versatile.
We’ve had lots of fun cooking and eating them here at The Spice Tailor and,
in fact, we think they are the perfect flatbread and not just for Indian food.
We’ve enjoyed them in hot sandwiches, topped and baked them for delicious,
crisp-edged light pizzas, made them into chilli cheese toasts and topped them
with eggs and crisp bacon. They also make amazing wraps for grills and BBQs.
Have a look in our cookbook section for a few ideas to get you started.
We really believe our flame baked Naans are the best in the market.
We’re really proud of them and excited to hear how you like to eat yours!
We hope you love them as much as we do.
