Indian Spiced Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches

Our Rustic Rogan Josh kit pairs perfectly with earthy flavours and really complements meats like lamb and beef. Here, I have used it to coat some lightly charred steak to create a spiced twist on the American ‘Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich’. I love taking inspiration from street-food dishes from around the world. In this one, the flavours of the Indian spices, combined with charred peppers and melty cheese results in a dish that I keep coming back to for a delicious, easy lunch. It’s also great garden party food to share with friends.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack of The Spice Tailor Rustic Rogan Josh
  • 450g sirloin steak
  • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 2 hoagie rolls, or a soft baguette/large hot dog bun
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 100g mature cheddar, grated

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp. of oil over high heat in a pan, lightly season the steak and place into the pan when hot.
  3. Heat for 2-3 minutes before turning over, or until lightly charred.
  4. Once the steak has been charred, put this to rest on a plate.
  5. Add the bell peppers and the onion to the steak pan, and cook this over high heat to char the vegetables.
  6. While the vegetables are cooking, grate the cheddar and slice the steak thinly against the grain of the meat.
  7. Add the Rustic Rogan Josh sauce into the pan, and cook out for a couple of seconds and then add the sliced steak and cook for a few moments until heated through.
  8. Grill the bread slightly to warm them through, and then add the steak and sauce on to the bread, topped with the cooked bell peppers/onions along with the grated cheese.
  9. Pop the sandwiches, still open, into the oven and cook for 2 minutes, to melt the cheese and serve.
