This is probably the most cooked dish in India as it is a healthy source of vegetarian protein and is very satisfying. These buttery lentils are lifted with warming spices, zingy ginger, savoury garlic, and tangy tomatoes.

Contains a whole spice pouch, a 'tarka' spiced sauce and cooked lentils.

Lentil curries have been eaten in India as far back as people can remember. It was the protein of choice for India’s large vegetarian population, but was also advocated by Ayurvedic doctors as the healthiest choice of protein. Over the centuries, it has become one of the most eaten dishes in India.

Our Spicy Tarka Daal kit makes a delicious lentil curry with a combination of buttery, nutty lentils nestled in spicy sauce of caramelised onions, tangy tomatoes, ginger and garlic and, of course, chillies. This daal is the ideal store-cupboard basic as it comes with everything you need to make it and cooks in just minutes.

Lentil curries make delicious side dishes, but are often the star of the show, served with some flatbreads or rice and vegetables on the side. You can add bits in to make a one-pot meal, or use them as an ingredient and create wonderful complex dishes with it!  We have lots of recipes in our ‘Cook’ section to get you started.

Anjum’s Top Tips

Fry the whole spices in 1-2 tsp of hot oil (or ghee) until sizzling

Stir in the tarka sauce (the small pouch) and bring to a simmer

Add the lentils and 100-150ml water, bring to a simmer… then serve!

OUR PERFECT Spicy Tarka Lentil Daal

Finish with fresh chopped coriander for added freshness.

Cook the spices in ghee for that restaurant flavour, or finish with a knob of butter.

Add in a few handfuls of baby spinach for a one-pot meal.

Add a little single cream at the end of cooking to calm the heat, or serve with yoghurt for a cool, creamy tang.
